ShaGa Studio has been selected for the 'Emerging talent-architecture' section of Surface Magazine // 15.03.12

ShaGa Studio has been selected for the 'Emerging talent -Architecture'  section in  March-April edition of Surface Magazine [NewYork]:

SHaGa Studios's designs make sustainability innate.

ShaGa Studio may sound a bit like a reggae record label. In fact, it’s a Netherlands-based design firm, one whose international and intellectual outlook is as broad and varied as the backgrounds of its designers, Shany Barath and Gary Freedman (whose first names combine to form its title). The life and-work partners met as architecture students at Technion International School of Engineering in Haifa, Israel. Together, they moved to Holland for graduate school and then to England to study at the famed Architectural Association. They still commute to the AA two days a week, teaching courses in London, and then wing it back to Amsterdam to work on projects for their now two-year-old firm. From a shelter in a London park to a Holocaust memorial for Atlantic City, Barath and Freedman’s work—which dates back to a stint with UNStudio, where they’ve worked on and off since 2006—demonstrates a range almost as startling as its biomorphic visual complexity. For a proposed municipal center in the seaside town of Netanya, Israel, ShaGa produced a gently sculpted, vase-like tower with striated bands rising from a multi-tiered base. “It started from our understanding of airflow and wind pressure,” says Freedman, , citing the area’s coastal breezes as a reference point for the tower’s organic contours. For ShaGa, looking to the environment isn’t an end unto itself. “It’s not that sustainability isn’t the target,” says Barath, 33, “but sustainability is a part of the process.” ShaGa’s approach anticipates a design future where sustainability is an innate part of architectural thought, not just a box to be checked  [Surface Magazine, March 2012].

About 'Active Matter':

For over a century, desert expansion and fertile land degradation has been highlighted as a significant global environmental problem; a problem affecting 36 million square kilometers and over 1.3 billion people worldwide. With a desert covering over 60 per cent of its land, Israel has become one of the few countries in the world that has managed to reverse current global desertification trends and create new green habitable environments in arid desert ecology. Capitalising on Israel’s knowledge in desert engineering, ‘Active Matter’ will explore environmental and recreational infrastructures across multiple scales; spanning from an individual infrastructural module(irrigation traps/flood control/soil stabilizers etc) to its distribution logic over a vast territory and the emergence of novel recreation fabrics within the ‘Negev’ desert.

Garden Ribbons- ShaGa's design for Netanya's new city hall is unveiled // 01.11.11

Garden Ribbons - Spiralling tower atriums bring in natural light and air and integrating a coherent organisational and sustainable approach.

At last, A sneak-preview of our competition entry for the new city hall and culture complex in Netanya [in collaboration with Shyovitz Architects].

The project is a  30 floors mixed use complex consisting out of a governmental tower and a sloping plinth with cultural and commercial functions.

The integrative massing approach  binds together the fragmented existing context, creating not only a transition of public spaces (from an urban plaza on the south side to an internal green heart on the north) but most importantly creates a coherent image for the future regeneration of Netanya's centre.

ShaGa's Lab at the AA - 'Data Murals' Media research at the Architectural Association // 23/03/11

'Data Murals' Studio at the Architectural Association will present its work this week.

Great and Exciting work by the students, good luck!

'Data Murals'  observes Bio-Imaging visualization techniques as potential indicators for new computational methods revealing extreme high data resolutions and unique contemporary exposure of materiality. Within the architectural realm that is in itself composed of multi-scalar material properties, students first exposed the ghosted data sets of simple physical environments in order to find correlating edges between the physical and the digital.

The development of data sorting techniques [geometry, color, light, fabrication method, etc.], were translated into variables of design components resulting in a repertoire of colorful luminous objects.
